Who we are

The H Line (New York State HIV/STI/HIV Hotline), funded by the NYS Department of Health, AIDS Institute, is a free, confidential telephone and online information service that provides accurate, up-to-date information, emotional support, and referrals related to HIV, sexual health, and related services. The hotline is available to individuals across New York State, including people seeking HIV prevention information, individuals living with HIV, partners and family members, healthcare providers, and community organizations.

History of the Program

The NYS HIV Hotline was established in the early years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, when there was widespread fear, stigma, and limited public understanding about the virus. As HIV cases increased in New York State during the 1980s and 1990s, there was a critical need for a reliable source of information where people could ask questions anonymously and receive accurate, up-to-date guidance.

The hotline was created to meet this need by providing a safe, confidential space for individuals to learn about HIV transmission, prevention, testing, and care. Over the years, the program has evolved alongside advancements in HIV science, treatment, and prevention. As new developments emerged—such as antiretroviral therapy, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)—the hotline expanded its services to ensure that callers receive current, evidence-based information.

What We Do

The hotline is staffed by trained counselors who provide compassionate, nonjudgmental, confidential support. Callers can receive information about:

  • HIV transmission and prevention
  • HIV testing options and locations
  • PrEP and PEP
  • HIV treatment and living well with HIV
  • Harm reduction strategies
  • Sexual health and safer sex practices
  • Disclosure, stigma, and relationship concerns
  • And more

Counselors also offer emotional support for individuals who may be feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

We offer support in English and Spanish, with interpretation services available to assist callers in any other language.
